I plan to add wood texture to my piece, along with a metal keyhole on the front of the chest. My original design included more metal outlining the edges but that does not seem like it would work well so I am not going to do that. I need to smooth out the edges more and make everything level. I will finish it off with a wood colored glaze in addition to a metallic glaze on the lock.
The difficult part of this sculpture has been bending the slabs and cutting the slabs to the correct width and dimensions. I find that the slabs have really come together well and that it looks like a clean piece of sculpture, probably my best work. The process I took up to this point have been as follows: I calculated dimensions and created paper outlines that I used later when cutting the slabs. Afterwards I got clay using wire cutters and attempted leveling them out, but utterly failed putting paper bits, lumps, and a healthy mix of exasperation into the clay. Next I re rolled out the clay and cut it to the right dimensions. I slipped and scored the slabs and connected them using the 45 degree angles. After this I bent the top of the chest using a water bottle. Lastly I added the wood lines to differentiate between each "piece" of "wood". The place represented in my painting is Hawaii. This place is important to me because I took a vacation there and I love to be on the beach and go on adventures. Hawaii has also been one of my favorite places I have traveled to, which is saying a lot because I have been fortunate enough to travel across the globe a lot. This painting represents some of the key aspects of Hawaii which are spending time at the beach and watching the sun go down.
